Artist Karen Bonaker created this painting of an artichoke from scratch using John's Artists' Brushes for Adobe Photoshop CS5. Karen commented, "I enjoy these brushes so much and look forward to playing with them."

Karen and I are both former residents of the Santa Cruz area, which is nearby Watsonville and Castroville—both known for their artichoke crop. We both commiserated how much we miss the local fresh artichokes available there. If you've never had steamed artichokes, you are missing a definite treat!

Russell and I will be co-teaching a pre-conference Photoshop CS5 workshop, From Reality to Renaissance, at Adobe MAX 2010 this coming October 23-25 in Los Angeles, CA. Using brushes from my Artists' Brushes for Photoshop CS5, I painted the above promotional image based on a photograph of Russell. Yes, he really dressed up for the occasion! Here's more on the workshop:

Starting with photographic portraits we will turn reality into renaissance. Participants will unleash the powerful combination of cameras, computers, and Adobe Creative Suite® 5 software to produce an original artwork on canvas.

This class will introduce you to a new set of creative techniques that will be useful for both designers and photographers. Our goal will be to turn the normal into the unique. Taught on the latest Mac computers, Russell Brown@MAX offers a limited class size and an intimate, inspiring environment for in-depth instruction on Photoshop CS5 and many of its new features. This unique, project-based class gives you time to ask questions of industry experts and network with others in your field. If you like crazy and inspirational events, then this is what you've been waiting for.

Artist Janet Stoppee created this painting of a door knocker using John's Artists' Brushes for Adobe Photoshop CS5. Using a photograph as a reference, Janet utilized my Cloning Layer Action (which is included with John's Artists' Brushes) to flow the colors of the reference photograph through her currently selected brush. The result is a non-destructive layer painting,

Says Janet, "I love the brushes in Photoshop and I never had the experience of getting totally lost in actually painting in my previous digital painting experiences! I am going to work on cloning an image today and then adding more color using the MagicPicker color picker, that John recommended. This is all new and very exciting."

Janet's husband, Brian remarked, "Janet just got into John Derry’s latest brushes, actions, and textures over the weekend. This the fastest she’s been able to produce an image like this."

You can visit the Stoppee's web site at M2 Media Studios.
